How to convert Bangla PDF to Word

Updated

Contents

To turn a scanned Bengali PDF into a Word document you can edit, open PDF to Word, add the PDF, tick “Recognise text in scans (OCR)”, select Bengali under Languages, and press Export DOCX. Our server reads the Bengali letters on each page with OCR (optical character recognition), then writes them into a DOCX file as text you can edit, copy and search.

Choosing Bengali is the step that decides the result. English is selected when the page opens, and a Bengali page read as English does not fail: it comes back as Latin letters that look like words and mean nothing, with no error.

This runs on our secure server, not in your browser. Our privacy policy says the uploaded file is deleted when the job ends, the result can be downloaded for 60 minutes, and the stored copy is erased by a daily storage rule some time after it is 1 day old.

Open PDF to Word

Step by step

  1. 1Open the PDF to Word tool and drop your scanned PDF where it says Add your PDF, or click to pick one. Files up to 100 MB are accepted.
  2. 2Tick “Recognise text in scans (OCR)”. Without it, a scan has no text for the conversion to carry.
  3. 3Under Languages, select Bengali. If the page also has English words, such as names, addresses or technical terms, leave the English chip on as well; if it has none, deselect English.
  4. 4Press Export DOCX, which uploads your PDF over an encrypted connection to our server, where the OCR and the conversion run in one job.
  5. 5Download the DOCX when it is ready. The download link stops working after 60 minutes, so save it right away.
  6. 6Open it in Word, LibreOffice or Google Docs and read the text through against the page before you use it.

What the Word file holds

Each scanned page comes through as its picture, followed by the Bengali text read from it, as plain paragraphs you can edit. The words are real Bengali text in Unicode, so you can search them, copy them into another document, or change them.

The look of the page is not rebuilt. Fonts, columns, tables and spacing are not carried over, and a line of the scan can come through as a paragraph of its own, so expect to join some lines and to style the headings yourself. Delete the picture once you no longer need it to compare against.

Word picks its own Bengali font to display the text, such as Nirmala UI or Vrinda on Windows. If the letters show as empty boxes, the computer has no Bengali font installed; the text in the file is still correct, and it shows once a Bengali font is installed.

Getting a good result

OCR reads printed and typed Bengali: books, letters, forms, office documents and newspaper pages. It is not made for handwriting, which usually comes back as nonsense or not at all.

The clearer the scan, the fewer mistakes. Scan in your scanner's document or text setting rather than a low-resolution preview, keep the page straight and flat, and avoid shadows, glare and blur if you photograph it with a phone.

Even on a clean scan, read the result through. A misread usually changes one letter cluster, not a whole word: a vowel sign or a small mark such as the chandrabindu (ঁ) can be dropped, or a conjunct read as a similar one.

When you want a searchable PDF instead

If you need to find and copy Bengali words in the document but not edit it, use OCR PDF: select Bengali under Languages, choose Searchable PDF under Output, and press Recognize text. The page looks exactly as before, with the recognised text laid invisibly under it.

If your scan is a JPG or PNG photo rather than a PDF, OCR PDF takes it as it is; for a Word file, turn the photo into a PDF first with JPG to PDF.

Common questions

Can I convert a Bangla PDF to Word for free?

Yes. There is no account and no payment: open PDF to Word, tick “Recognise text in scans (OCR)”, select Bengali, and download the DOCX.

Why does my Bangla text come out as English-looking gibberish?

Because the page was read with the wrong language. English is selected when the page opens; select Bengali under Languages and run the job again. A blurry or sideways scan can cause the same symptom.

My PDF already has selectable Bangla text. Do I need OCR?

No. If you can select the words in your PDF viewer and they paste as Bengali letters, leave “Recognise text in scans (OCR)” unticked and PDF to Word carries that text across as it is.

Why does text copied from my Bangla PDF paste as Latin letters?

Because the PDF was typed in an older, non-Unicode Bangla font, such as the SutonnyMJ fonts used with Bijoy, which stores Bengali letters as Latin ones. The conversion carries that text across exactly as stored, and OCR does not replace it: pages that already have text are kept as they are. One way round it is to make the pages pictures first, with PDF to JPG and then JPG to PDF, and convert that PDF with “Recognise text in scans (OCR)” ticked.

Can it read handwritten Bangla?

No. The OCR is made for printed and typed text; handwriting usually comes back as nonsense or not at all.

Is my file uploaded?

Yes. OCR needs a recognition engine that runs on our secure server, so your PDF is uploaded over an encrypted connection. The uploaded file is deleted when the job ends, and the result can be downloaded for 60 minutes.
