About this tool

Translate a PDF's selectable text into another language with AI, packaged as translated Markdown and plain text.

Sends your PDF's selectable text — not the file — to a third-party AI provider, under terms that prohibit training on it.

More details

Translate PDF has an AI model rewrite your document's text between any two of 21 languages, from Spanish and Bengali to Japanese and Arabic. The model is told to keep headings and lists, leave names, numbers, code and URLs alone unless they clearly need translating, and add, drop or summarise nothing. You get a ZIP such as lease-translation.zip holding translation.md, translation.txt, a README and a manifest naming the model and languages: translated text, not a rebuilt PDF, so fonts, columns and images are not recreated.

The work happens online, on pdf.xyz's secure server. Your PDF, one file up to 100 MB, is uploaded over TLS; our server extracts its text and sends that text, plus any instruction you typed, but not the PDF file, to a third-party AI provider used under agreements that prohibit training on data sent through the API. The uploaded PDF is deleted when the job finishes, the ZIP's download link expires after 60 minutes, and a daily storage rule then erases the stored copy.

One pass carries up to 10,258 characters; longer documents are split at page boundaries, translated in order and reassembled. Your browser counts the text before anything uploads, so a file with no page that fits a pass, or a scan with no text layer, is stopped without touching the allowance. 30,774 free characters of AI text a day for your connection — the allowance resets daily. The allowance is charged when the job is created, just after the upload: a document needing more than is left today is refused whole with nothing charged rather than half translated, and one over 30,774 characters, the whole day's allowance, has to be split into smaller files first.

When to use it

  • Understand a contract or lease written abroad

Read a rental agreement or supplier contract in English before you ask questions, and have a qualified translator check any wording you will sign.

  • Read a report or thesis in another language

A single-column document in Japanese, Chinese (Simplified), or Korean becomes Markdown you can skim, quote and search. Our server reads each line straight across the page, so on a two-column paper the two columns' lines reach the model interleaved.

  • Localise a manual without renaming the product

Ask in Instructions (optional) to "keep product names and model numbers in English" while a datasheet is rendered in German or Portuguese.

  • Translate a scanned letter

A scan holds pictures of letters, not text. Run it through OCR PDF with the Searchable PDF output first, then bring that PDF here.

  • Share a report with a team in their language

Turn an English report into Bengali, Hindi, or Indonesian and paste the Markdown into a wiki or email.

What this tool can do

Free allowance
30,774 free characters of AI text a day for your connection — the allowance resets daily. The other AI tools draw on the same allowance.
Languages
21 languages to translate into — the source language is detected automatically, or picked from the same list.

How it works

  1. 1Add one PDF

Drop a PDF on the box labelled "Add your PDF, or browse", or click it to pick one; Remove clears it. The box takes a file at once; Translate PDF works only once the page confirms a secure server with an AI model is available, and the file goes to our secure server only when you press it.

  2. 2Pick the languages

Choose a target under Translate into. Leave Source language on Auto-detect to let the model work it out, or pick the source yourself and the model is told which language it is reading.

  3. 3Add instructions if you need them

Instructions (optional) takes up to 300 characters, such as "use a formal register". It is passed to the model and recorded in the package's README and manifest; leave it blank for a plain, faithful translation.

  4. 4Press Translate PDF

Your browser counts the text first, while the button reads Translating…; if it fits, the PDF uploads over TLS (Uploading your file…), waits in the queue (Waiting for our server…), is translated (Translating…), and the ZIP is fetched (Downloading the result…) before the download button appears.

  5. 5Download the ZIP

Press the button that names the package, such as Download lease-translation.zip; it saves the copy the page already fetched. Pages that could not be translated are marked where they sat. The stored copy on pdf.xyz is only reachable for 60 minutes.

Common questions

Will the translated PDF keep the original layout?

No PDF comes back: you get Markdown and plain text, without the original's fonts, columns, images or page positions. To typeset it, paste it into your own document or run translation.md through Markdown to PDF. That tool refuses scripts it cannot draw correctly, so Arabic or Thai output has to go into your own document. It also refuses a translation.md carrying any page notice, because the ⚠️ in each notice counts as emoji there; delete that sign first.

Can I translate a scanned PDF?

Not directly. Only text the PDF already contains as text is read, and your browser stops a file with none before it uploads or draws on the free allowance. Run the scan through OCR PDF with the right recognition language and the Searchable PDF output, then translate the PDF it returns.

Does the AI provider train on the document I translate?

The provider receives the extracted text and any instruction you typed, not the PDF file, under agreements that prohibit training on data sent through the API. pdf.xyz cannot control what a provider does beyond those terms, so if they are not enough for a document, keep it out of every AI tool.

What happens if one page holds too much text?

A page over 10,258 characters cannot fit one pass, so it is skipped rather than cut off, and a notice where it sat names the page and its character count. Extracting that page on its own does not help, because the page itself is over the limit. Separately, if our server finds more text than the job reserved from the free allowance, or more pages with text than your browser counted, translation stops at that page and one notice there names the untranslated pages and which limit ran out.

How accurate is an AI translation of a PDF?

It is machine output and may contain errors, as the package's README says. The model is told to leave an unintelligible passage as it is rather than guess, and the manifest names the model. Check important passages against the original.

How large can my file be?

Up to 100 MB per file.

Is Translate PDF free?

Yes. 30,774 free characters of AI text a day for your connection — the allowance resets daily. The other AI tools draw on the same allowance.

How much of my PDF can Translate PDF translate in one run?

10,258 characters of selectable text per pass — about 5 sparsely-set pages, or 1 page of dense text. Translation writes roughly as much as it reads, so that ceiling is the model's output budget — far below the reading cap the other AI tools state. A longer document is not refused for length: it is split at page boundaries, translated a few pages at a time, then reassembled in order. A SINGLE page holding more than that many characters cannot be translated at all — it is skipped, and the result says so in place, at the point where that page was. The whole document is charged against the free daily allowance when the job is created, so a document needing more than is left today is refused before it runs, with nothing charged, rather than half translated; one over 30,774 characters, the whole day's allowance, has to be split into smaller files. If our server finds more text or more pages than the job reserved, translation stops there and a notice in place names the untranslated pages and why, so nothing stops silently.

Which languages can Translate PDF translate into?

21 languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Russian, Ukrainian, Polish, Swedish, Turkish, Arabic, Hindi, Chinese (Simplified), Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Thai and Bengali. The source language is detected automatically (“Auto-detect”), or you can pick it from the same list.

Can Translate PDF get things wrong?

Yes. The result is written by an AI model from the PDF's selectable text, and a model can miss or misread details. Check anything you rely on against the document itself.
