PDF to JPG
PopularRender pages as JPG images.
About this tool
Export every PDF page, or just the ones you pick, as a high-resolution JPG image in colour or grayscale — rendered right in your browser.
This tool processes files entirely on your device. Nothing is uploaded to a server.
More details
PDF to JPG paints the pages of your PDF — all of them, or only the ones you pick — onto a canvas with pdf.js and saves each one as a JPEG picture, in colour or in grayscale, with the page's built-in rotation applied. The renderer and its decoders for JPEG 2000 and JBIG2 images load from pdf.xyz itself, and all of the drawing and encoding is done by your own browser: the PDF is not uploaded.
There are 3 resolutions to choose from: Screen (96 DPI), High (150 DPI) or Print (300 DPI), with High selected at the start. There is no quality slider; every JPEG is encoded at quality 92 out of 100 on a white background, since JPEG cannot store transparency. A one-page PDF downloads as a single file (flyer.pdf becomes flyer.jpg). When more than one page is rendered they arrive as a ZIP: all pages of a 12-page report.pdf become report-jpg.zip, holding report-page-01.jpg through report-page-12.jpg, with page numbers zero-padded to the width of the page count so the images sort in reading order. Grayscale saves single-channel JPEGs, which are smaller than colour ones.
It converts a single PDF per run, up to 100 MB. One that needs a password to open stops at the loading step, with a message saying it is password-protected. A PDF that opens without a password converts even if its author restricted printing or copying. When pdf.js fails to decode an embedded image, the result panel states how many images could not be decoded rather than leaving you to spot the gap yourself.
When to use it
Attach a page where only images are allowed
Many photo fields, on listing sites, profile galleries and support-ticket forms, accept JPEG but not PDF. Convert the menu, certificate or poster and upload the JPG of the page you need.
Put slides into a document or email
A deck exported as PDF becomes one JPG per slide, ready to paste into a report, a newsletter or a wiki page. Screen is enough when a slide is shown at its natural size; the preselected High leaves room for readers to zoom in on small print.
Send a print shop an image file
Some printers and photo kiosks want images rather than PDFs. At Print (300 DPI) a US Letter page comes out 2550 pixels wide.
Make thumbnails for a catalogue or archive
Screen (96 DPI) gives the smallest images of the 3 presets, which suits preview grids, intranet listings and quick visual indexes of long reports.
What this tool can do
- Resolutions
- Screen (96 DPI), High (150 DPI) or Print (300 DPI) — each page you choose becomes one JPG image, in colour or grayscale, rendered in your browser.
How it works
1Choose your PDF
Drag the PDF onto the box labelled "Drop your PDF here, or browse", or click it to pick a file up to 100 MB; if you drop several, only the first is used. A header line then shows its page count and size.
2Pick a resolution
Under Resolution, click Screen (96 DPI), High (150 DPI) or Print (300 DPI). A higher DPI gives sharper text and larger files.
3Choose the pages and colour
Under Pages, keep All pages, or click Select pages and type the ones you want, such as 1-3, 5 or 8- for page 8 to the end; a page the PDF does not have is named in a note, and nothing renders until the range is fixed. Under Colour, pick Colour or Grayscale.
4Render the pages
Click the button that reads "Render" followed by the number of pages chosen, for example "Render 12 pages". While it works, a progress line and bar count the pages as they are drawn.
5Download the images
One rendered page gives a "Download JPG" button; more than one, say 12, gives "Download ZIP (12 images)" instead. Each of the first 24 pages can also be saved on its own from the download button on its preview tile. "Change resolution" goes back to the resolution choice so you can render again.
Common questions
What DPI should I use for JPG pages?
Each inch of page becomes as many pixels as the DPI. Screen (96 DPI) suits screens, High (150 DPI) is the default middle ground, and Print (300 DPI) is for print or zooming in. Poster-sized pages are scaled down to a fixed pixel limit.
Can I convert only some pages?
Yes. Click Select pages and type them, for example 1-3, 5. Only those pages are rendered, and each image keeps its page number from the PDF: page 5 of a 12-page report.pdf is report-page-05.jpg, whether it downloads on its own or, with more than one page chosen, in the ZIP.
Why was my password-protected PDF rejected?
Because it needs a password to open, and the converter cannot read a page without it. A PDF that opens freely but restricts printing or copying converts like any other. Unlock PDF removes the password when you enter it; it cannot recover one. Be aware that Unlock PDF, unlike this conversion, does not run in your browser: the locked file and the password you type are uploaded to pdf.xyz's secure server. Convert the unlocked copy here afterwards.
Will the text in the JPG still be selectable or searchable?
No. A JPG is a flat picture, so the words become pixels. If you need the text itself, use PDF to Text. If you want the embedded photos at their stored resolution rather than pictures of whole pages, Extract Images saves them as separate files and lists as skipped any image it cannot recover.
Is JPG the right format for text-heavy pages?
JPEG is lossy and suits photos and scans best; around sharp black-on-white edges it can leave faint smudges even at quality 92. PDF to PNG renders the same pages at the same resolutions losslessly, keeping type and line art crisp.
What does the warning about images that could not be decoded mean?
pdf.js counts each embedded image it could not decode. Those images are blank in the JPGs while the rest of each page converts normally, so the count tells you to check the output before relying on it.
Does PDF to JPG work offline?
Not fully. The page and its processing engine load over the network, and parts of the engine are fetched the first time a step needs them. The processing itself runs on your device. Rendering a page that holds a JPEG 2000 or JBIG2 image, as scanned documents often do, downloads an image decoder from our site the first time it is needed, and that step needs a connection. Chinese, Japanese or Korean text whose font is not embedded in the PDF needs a character map, downloaded from our site the first time it is needed, and that step needs a connection.
How large can my file be?
Up to 100 MB per file.
What resolution are the JPG images?
You choose: Screen (96 DPI), High (150 DPI) or Print (300 DPI). Higher DPI gives sharper, larger files. Neither side of a rendered page may exceed 5,000 pixels, so a very large page is rendered below the preset.
Do I get one JPG or a ZIP?
A one-page PDF downloads as a single JPG named after your file. When you render more than one page, they go into one ZIP, named in reading order — for example report-page-03.jpg — and the first 24 pages can also be saved one by one from their previews.
Can I save the JPG images in black and white?
Yes. Choose Grayscale and every page is saved as a single-channel grayscale JPEG — genuinely grey in the file, not colour with the saturation turned down — which is also smaller than the colour version.
