How to convert Markdown to PDF

Updated

Contents

To turn Markdown into a PDF, open the Markdown to PDF tool, paste your Markdown or pick a .md file, and create the PDF. Headings, lists, quotes and code blocks are typeset into pages right in your browser.

Nothing is sent to a server: the text stays on your device from start to finish, and there is no account to create.

This guide lists the Markdown the tool supports, what the finished page looks like, and when Text to PDF is the simpler choice.

The Markdown it supports

Headings, paragraphs, bulleted and numbered lists, block quotes, fenced code blocks, horizontal rules and tables. Bold and italics print as plain text, and a link keeps its address in parentheses.

Headings run from # to ######, lists can be bulleted or numbered, and code inside triple-backtick fences is set in a fixed-width font with its line breaks kept.

What the PDF looks like

US Letter (8.5 × 11 in) portrait pages with 0.75 in margins and a page number (1 / N) at the foot of each page. There is no page-size or margin setting.

Sources can be up to 2 MB. For plain notes without any Markdown, Text to PDF paginates the text as it is; to go the other way, PDF to Markdown turns a PDF's selectable text back into Markdown.

Common questions

Is my Markdown sent to a server?

No. Markdown to PDF runs entirely in your browser, and the text stays on your device from start to finish.

Does it support tables?

Yes. A GFM table — a header row, then a divider row of dashes — prints as a grid, keeping each column's alignment and wrapping long cells to fit the page width.

Can I choose the page size?

No. US Letter (8.5 × 11 in) portrait pages with 0.75 in margins and a page number (1 / N) at the foot of each page.

Does Markdown to PDF work offline?

Not fully. The page and its processing engine load over the network, and parts of the engine are fetched the first time a step needs them. The processing itself runs on your device. Drawing text in a script outside the Western European alphabet downloads a matching font from our site the first time it is needed, and that step needs a connection.
